INTRODUCTION

The Nigerian Institute of Architects recognises and acknowledges the need for capacity building of Architects by virtue of their important role in shaping the three-dimensional environment for people, and by extension, for the Nation, through planning, design, development, maintenance and the provision of suitable shelter for all facets of daily life (i.e. Homes, Schools, Offices, Religious Centres, Institutions, Industries, Recreational Facilities, Hospitality, etc.). Thus, the Structural Plan for a Continuing Professional Development Programme (CPDP) was developed by the Building Research and Standards Committee (BRSC) of the Institute to realise the objectives of ensuring the planned process to acquire, update, improve and maintain proficiency of the Nigerian Architect.

Consequently, the Executive Council of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, at its Meeting of 20th October 2008, approved the Continuing Professional Development Programme Structure (CPDP-S) and directed its immediate and full implementation.

The Structure affords individual capacity building, continuing development of the Institute and voluntary contributions to Community work. The set guidelines in the Structure clearly show how points can be attained from the Architect’s efforts and activities within the Built Environment.

As from January 2009, it shall be mandatory for the Nigerian Architect to score minimum CPDP points, in addition to other requirements for the annual renewal of the Practice License in Nigeria.

The progression routes for earning points are clearly illustrated and a very active and innovative Architect can also get rewards for intelligent activities in self-development, service to the Institute and contributions to the Community. Organisers of such activities are termed Programme Managers.

Accordingly, all Architects are required to complete the CPDP Application Form
(NIA/CPDP/001) for mandatory participation, while prospective Programme Managers shall also complete the CPDP Programme Manager’s Form (NIA/CPDP/002).
