NIA BRIEF HISTORY
1950s - Three Nigerian Architects, studying in London, conceived the idea of a professional body of architects to be formed to carry out detailed planning for the establishment of an institute in Nigeria.
April 1, 1960 - Six months before the nation’s independence, The Nigerian Institute of Architects was founded as Nigerian Society of Architects in Lagos with 13 foundation members.
April 2005 - 45years after, the membership of NIA surpasses the 4,000 mark comprising of Fellows, Full and Honorary members, Associates Graduate and Student members, located in 32 State Chapters.
The NIA is administered by its policy making body, Executive Council, comprising of elected, co-opted and appointed members through the various committees of the Council. It is a non-governmental organization, which however performs some statutory functions on behalf of the ARCON (Architects Registration Council Of Nigeria).
The Institute continues to cooperate with governmental and non-governmental agencies, Institutions and other bodies in the changing roles of the Architect in the society, as well as advancing the aims and objectives of the Institute.
ARCHIBUILT is one of NIA public service programmes being pursued to augment the efforts of the Government and other internal groups in the development of the Nation in the area of building materials development and technology.
